Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Where can I get information on joining the Corps?

A: Check out the Join section of our website!

Q: Who can I contact if I have any questions about the corps?

A: Check out the Contact section of this website.

Q: Is there any truth to the rumor that the Renegades are switching to B-flat horns this season?

A: No, but the corps is switching to B-flat percussion equipment.  See the Press Release for more information.

Q: Where did the corps name come from?

A: The official corps name is "The San Francisco Renegades Drum and Bugle Corps".  "San Francisco" was chosen because that's where the corps is from.  "The" is a definite article, which we chose because it highlights the fact that there is only one corps from San Francisco calling itself the Renegades.  We threw "Drum and Bugle Corps" on the end because people kept thinking we were a company softball team.  And "Renegades" was chosen because it is worth exactly 11 points in Scrabble.  This may not seem like a high-scoring word, but if you play it on a triple-word score, hey, now you're talking.  As an interesting bit of trivia, the name "Renegades" won a close vote of the membership of the corps, narrowly edging out the second-place finisher, "Pork, the Other White Meat."

Q: When did the corps first get together?

A: The Renegades originally formed in the mid-1950s.  The corps was known by many different names originally - first, the Quarrymen; then Johnny and the Moondogs, the Moonshiners, and finally, the Silver Renegades.  The corps finally hit the big time in 1957, when they dropped the adjective "Silver" from their name, and kicked Pete Best out of the snare line.
