Day 1 has officially come to a close as 10 or so drummers cram into our room to check out the run-through video from tonight. Things are a little different for me this year, because this is the first time I have been to DCA, and not been a performer. Its really one of the first times I have ever been in front of the corps, just being able to listen, and let me tell ya, its a whole ‘nother ball game. This corps really does have the balls, and power that people have been talking about for years.
Day went real smooth, much smoother then previous “day 1″s. Every single corps member was there from minute one of rehearsal, and they showed up to play. Each section started out in their respective warm-up blocks, and we ended with a quick hour of ensemble and a mighty fine run-through.
I know I promised video, and trust me I have it. I took over an hour of footage tonight from the 4 hours they rehearsed. Ill try and get something up mid-day tomorrow, we’re just having some technical difficulties.
Anyway… Im gonna go to sleep. Didnt get the best sleep on the train last night, as I’m not exactly used to falling asleep in a hard chair. Heres a few status updates from members:
Good morning! Its nearly nine am and we’re just about to pull into buffalo, which means we’re less then an hour from rochester. We already have some pretty big plans the minute we get into town when bass drum guru Kent Cater picks us up from the station. We can hardly contain ourselves because its been exactly a year since we have had breakfast from our favorite country store, Cracker Barrel.
As soon as we can get to an internet connection, ill be able to fill you in on the rest of the corps travels, including a group that had their flight cancelled!
Before I head off to the airport, I wanted to give you guys one last full performance video from this past weekend’s family day.
Here is the ballad “Death March”. Enjoy!
So today was quite the adventure for your C7 host. I told you I had a surprise, and mission: accomplished!
I had this great idea Monday night, to fly into Chicago, and surprise the Heckmanns by riding the last day on the train with them. Honestly if you knew how fun it really is… you would too! So I flew out of Oakland this morning @ 7am, heading towards Chicago, with a stop in Long Beach. I got into Chicago around 4pm, and immediately jumped on the subway/train to downtown. During this whole time, im texting with the brothers to find out exactly where they are. As I get off the subway, I find out they have been hanging out at Navy pier for a few hours, and will be leaving soon. So I get my train ticket, check my bag in, and hop on the first bus down to the Pier. The minute I get off the bus, I look to my right, and they are literally right there. Millions of people in Chicago, tens of thousands at Navy pier alone, and I find them within 2 minutes. So I fire up the camera, and start running towards them (keep in mind they had NOOO idea!). So I’m filming as I run up to Matt, and I ask “Hey do you know where the water taxi is?!” And I get the craziest look I have ever gotten in my life…. it was like he was looking at a ghost!
It was really funny, and I’m glad I caught it all on tape… maybe ill post it. Anyway, so here I am at union station in downtown Chicago. We got to take a nice water taxi ride back to here from the pier, and took a lot of pictures. We’ll post some up tomorrow.
Ok well time to hit the rails. We’ll be online tomorrow when all the good stuff starts at 4pm. Until then, See Ya!
Well its official as of 2:22 EST. The Bego boys have made it safely into Rochester with all of our gear. We cant say thank you enough to these guys for the trip that they make, just to haul our equipment.
Last night the Heckmanns had a little time off, a mile high in the sky. Unlike last years trip, the guys got to Denver so early, that they had a few hours to get off the train, and explore downtown Denver. I never did hear back from them after they were supposed to be back on-board, so lets hope they didnt decide to hit up the Rockies game instead!
As for the rest of the corps… its seems like a LOT of people are traveling out today, including myself. I actually have a suprise in store, but I wont fill you in on that just yet.
Safe travels everyone, we’ll see ya on the other side!
We’ll Keep this posted at the top of the page for the rest of the day for easy access. Keep checking below for the latest updates from the road!
Finally the sleeping beauties have woken up, and blessed us with an update! Heres Matt:
“Update #2, We are currently passing through the heart of Troopers country, Wyoming. Went through Laramie and are on our way to a little town called spear. From there we’ll hit Denver, and it looks like we’ll have a couple hours to explore downtown. Ill try to post some pictures of Denver later tonight. Until then, this is the the California Zephyr signing off…”
Meanwhile, while the bego is getting some work done, the boys are enjoying a mid-west fav.
