“Renegade Planet: A Space Opera”
World-class staff to bring exciting program to life
SAN FRANCISCO – November 23, 2009 – The San Francisco Renegades, long known as one of the most unique, easily-identifiable drum corps in the marching activity, have once again chosen a show that will have audiences leaping to their feet in stadiums across the country.
The Renegades 2010 program, entitled Renegade Planet: A Space Opera, will feature Thus Spoke Zarathustra by Richard Strauss, most notable as the opening fanfare from Stanley Kubrick’s classic film 2001: A Space Odyssey; Mars and Jupiter from Gustav Holst’s classic symphonic suite The Planets; “Interstellar Traffic Jam” from the beloved Hanna-Barbera cartoon The Jetsons; and selections from the science fiction blockbuster “Predator.”
“One of the finest design teams in the country has selected a show that is guaranteed to give the fans of the Renegades everything they’ve come to expect from us, and then some,” said Corps Director Chris Nalls. “In addition, a world-class staff has been recruited to bring this show to the field.”
Returning as brass caption head after a successful 2009 campaign is Rich Duarte. He will be working with Nalls, Larrie Dastrup, Greg Gilman and David Landers. The percussion caption is headed once again by Thom Shearer, and features Dan Hudson, Kent Cater, and two new staff members; Brian Sears, a Renegades alum who will be working with the front ensemble, and snare tech Kevin Murray.
“Getting Kevin to join the Renegades staff is a huge off-season acquisition, Kevin is one of the best techs on the planet, and he will be a big part of taking the percussion program to the next level,” said Executive Producer Lee Rudnicki.
Returning to head the colorguard caption are Mark Metzger and Vince Velasquez, whose names are synonymous with quality and excellence in the pageantry world.
“Simply put, Mark and Vince are two of the best in the business,” said Nalls.
Heading the Visual caption once again will be Dave Watrous, assisted by Dave Leon, James Jackson, Jed Roach, and Josh Bryan, another new addition to the Renegades staff.
The corps will be using five different brass arrangers to create this season’s music. They are:
John Meehan – John has drum corps in his blood. The son of DCI Hall of Famer Jack Meehan, John is the brass caption head of the Concord Blue Devils, where his hornlines have won nine Jim Ott High Brass awards since the 1994 season. John has arranged and composed music for marching bands and drum corps worldwide, as well as giving clinics on brass technique and performance.
James Peterson – James is a noted film and television composer who has also achieved great success in the drum corps activity. In 2008, James wrote the music for the Santa Clara Vanguard Cadets, who went on to win the DCI Open Class title that season. This is James’ first season with the Renegades.
Key Poulan – Key is one of the premiere arrangers and composers in the drum corps and marching band activity. He is also a notable concert band composer. He currently serves as composer and brass arranger for the Santa Clara Vanguard. Key has been the brass arranger for the Renegades since 2006.
Chris Nalls – Chris possesses over three decades of experience in the drum corps arena as a marching member, instructor, arranger, music director and corps director. He was the corps’ arranger from 2000-2002, and has written numerous works for marching band, and brass ensemble. Chris is currently arranger for the Silicon Valley Brass Band.
Larrie Dastrup – Known to fans as a featured soloist with the Renegades, Larrie is also an accomplished arranger who has been a part of the Renegades design team, coordinating and composing solos since the corps’ early days, while playing a dual role as a performer and staff member.
The Renegades will be hosting their Open House December 5 and 6 and Branham High School in San Jose, CA. For more information, visit www.renegades.org
About the Renegades
The San Francisco Renegades were founded in 1996 by a small group of people that got together simply for the love of the drum corps activity. The mission of the Renegade organization is to bring an unprecedented awareness and appreciation of the drum corps activity to the public through a comprehensive marketing and financial plan. Ten-time California State Champions, the Renegades have been finalists at the Drum Corps Associate Championships since 2002.
