Blast from the past…

How I Joined the Renegades – Adam Jones

Right out of high school I was involved with a junior corps that was starting up out of Woodland, CA called Shockwave. The two years I was in Shockwave playing snare drum and we only performed at the Stockton Show. I was there in 1999 and saw the Renegades and that was the first time I had ever heard of senior corps.

Renegades Add Master Percussion Technician Kevin Murray to Staff for 2010

Kevin Murray, 2-time individual champion and instructor for Blue Devils and Vanguard, has been named Chief Drum Technician with the San Francisco Renegades Drum & Bugle Corps. “I am excited to work with the Renegades to help them achieve their goal of advancing as players and competitors,” said Murray about the new position.

Kevin has a long history of success in drum corps. His playing career started on snare drum with the Velvet Knights in 1984 where the corps made its first top-12 DCI Finals appearance.

From 1986 to 1988, Kevin played snare drum for the Concord Blue Devils, winning the DCI championship and high percussion in 1986. Kevin won snare individuals in 1987 (winning on his first attempt at competing, an unprecedented feat up to that point) and became section leader in 1988.

From 1990-91, Kevin attended the University of North Texas where the drumline won consecutive P.A.S.I.C. drum titles, with Kevin winning the snare individual championship in 1990 and serving as section leader in 1991.

As an instructor, Kevin taught Blue Knights in 1991 under Ralph Hardimon, Santa Clara Vanguard from 1992-93 under Scott Johnson, and continued on to Blue Devils when Johnson made the change in 1994. The Blue Devils started a dominant run at that time, winning drums and corps titles in 1994, 1996 and 1997.

Kevin authored one of the most popular 60-second warm ups of all time: “The Ditty,” and was instrumental in developing the drumming technique and approach employed by many drum lines since 1994. Kevin also has had a successful career playing drum-set, playing with popular bands in the LA and SF Bay Area.
