Holiday Parade 2002

December 1, 2002 - Hollywood, CA: The streets of Hollywood were filled with the sound of drum corps as the northern California Renegades joined forces with the southern California Impulse and So Cal Dream drum corps for the Blockbuster Hollywood Spectacular 2002 holiday parade on Thanksgiving weekend. A great time was had by all as Impulse (and friends) strut their stuff amongst the stars and celebrities of Hollywood.

Wingnuts

With over 30 kinds of chicken wings, WingNuts was a great place for a pre-parade party.

More Wings

Several hours of wings and adult beverages flew by with lively discussion about west coast drum corps and the possibility of meeting Brittany Spears at the next days festivities.

Funny faces

With over 30 flavors of chicken wings, there's bound to be a few unusual flavors. Impulse director Charlie and Renegade percussionist Stuart make faces after sampling the house favorite: blackened sweet-and-sour sardine with peanut-butter, pickled prune and coconut, topped with a mayo dressing!

More wings

Ben built up quite an appetite on the 7+ hour drive from northern California.

Even more wings

Garry's hands are a blur as he digs into his wings sitting next to Impulse equipment master John.

Uniform fitting

Renegade Doug is fitted for his stylish Impulse threads. Quite a shock going from all-black to bright yellow. Do I notice a "7" somewhere?

Horn Arc

With over 50 horns, the combined hornlines sounded great playing Good King Wenceslas.

On the road again.

Renegade members Jeff and Carol were instantly 'on tour' as soon as they entered the bus.

Mr. Nash.

Mike Nash, a charter member of Renegades, is now a heavy with So Cal Dream. Mike remembers the Renegades early roots ... 7 people and a ham sandwich.

Skyline

With Los Angeles and Hollywood coming into sight, the 'pre-show' tension was building accompanied by a miracle: the LA freeways weren't bumper to bumper ... definitely a good omen!

  Street sign

Traffic into Hollywood became heavy. Renegades were entranced as Impulse and So Cal dream members endlessly debated the bus driver's choice of freeways getting to/from the parade. Renegades members just shook their heads and mumbled, "We hope this isn't a 3 hour tour !!!!"

7 jackets

Renegade members soon discover they can make a 7 on their chest if they stand next to each other in just the right pose.

Greg and Jeff

Former Blue Devils Greg and Jeff are temporarily stunned upon discovering they must 'loosen up' and do the Impulse Strut during the parade.

Tuning

The quickly changing temperatures as nightfall begins meant lots of tuning.

Impulse stunned and delighted the crowd by bursting into chaos during long drum breaks. The crowd responded warmly to the mayhem, shaking hands, trading high-fives, waving, offering chairs and generally having a great time
  Banner

It was dark when the parade began after being delayed over an hour due to a bomb scare ... which turned out to be Santa's street clothes!

Big flags

Impulse's signature exclamation mark flags made a majestic backdrop for the rest of the corps.

Wow...what unis.

Renegades Lynn and Greg felt right at home with the So Cal crowd since Lynn marched in, and Greg taught the Velvet Knights.

The corps' brilliant yellow jackets attracted fans like bees to honey, including a very vocal Laker's fan and some guy with a bullhorn.

Gabe and friend

Impulse superstar Gabe, who also marched in Renegades award-winning 2002 contra section, introduces his Renegades friends to his newest passion.

Possible Renegades guard uniforms for 2003?

A strategically placed piece of black electrical tape makes Doug's hat evil.

Don't forget! Renegades are inviting anyone wearing all black to join us in the Chinese New Years Parade in downtown San Francisco on February 15, 2003. Be there!
