Old Regrets
I grew up in a very small town in Western Canada and never heard about drum corps until I was too old to participate. It was one of my few regrets.

My oldest daughter made the Blue Knights trumpet line last year, just after she turned 17, and spent the summer telling me what an amazing experience it was performing with drum corps. When I told her how much I regretted not being able to do something similar at her age, she told me there were all-age corps and I should join one.

I First heard of the Renegades in the winter or 2003. I was auditioning for my high schools winter percussion ensemble and i was hoping to make snare (as it was, I was probably going to be put on 3rd or 4th bass). Well my percussion instructor (Chris Rodriquez, who played tenors for Renegades) said he’d make a deal with me. This Del Mar H.S alum started out watching Renegades from the stands while we rehearsed at the school… Here’s how she joined.

I knew about Renegades for a while before joining; they rehearsed at my High School time and again. I remember the excitement run through my little High School band when our director told us the Renegades would be there that weekend. I would almost always drop by the school to listen. Sometimes I’d sit behind the horn line staff and just enjoy the music (not to mention the sound of more than 10 horns). The contras were my favorites.

Jenn Russell is a first year member in the color guard who has never marched junior corps – here is the scoop on how she joined:

I had done color guard from 7th grade all the way through high school, including marching band, but decided to take a break (at peak junior corps age…) and see what else was out there upon reaching college. At Cal Poly, I joined the spring dance program and made dancing my focus.
